Leonard K. Deeds, age 89, of Orange, Virginia, died peacefully on February 12, 2021. He was born on October 21, 1931 in Erie, PA, son of Leonard Sr. and Grace Klenk Deeds.
Len graduated from Cathedral Preparatory School in 1950 and attended Gannon College. He graduated from the GE Apprenticeship Program and spent his career as an industrial engineer. He dedicated 27 years of service with Ridgid Kollmann, relocating with the company to Orange, where he was instrumental in establishing and expanding manufacturing operations.
Len was proud of his work, but his family, faith, church and community were the most important to him. He met the love of his life, Mary Wuenschel, when he was 15 years old, and he knew on that day in July 1946 that she was the one. They were married for 61 years until Mary’s death in 2013. He is survived by seven children, 15 grandchildren, and 3 great-grandchildren. His grandson, Eric Schroeck, and sister, Joyce Figurski, preceded him in death.
Len was a doer. He was a talented gardener and made the world’s best pie crust, vegetable beef soup and barbequed chicken, and together with Mary he made fantastic holiday dinners. He was fond of golf, football, western movies and good peanuts, and enjoyed them most with a cold beer. He had a sharp wit and a great sense of humor. He was a skilled card player and was unreasonably lucky at both cards and dice.
He served on the Men’s Council at St. George Catholic Church in Erie, where as President in the 1970s he helped build the bocce courts and establish the league that still exists today. He was a lector and usher and was on the Parish Council at St. John the Evangelist Church in Orange, and when the parish became St. Isidore the Farmer, he dedicated much time and talent to building the new church. Len was active in the Rotary Club in Orange, serving as treasurer and president, and was named by the local chapter as a Paul Harris Fellow.
Surviving are his children, David (Marilyn) Deeds of Orchard Park, NY; Judy (Tim) Schroeck of Fairview, PA; Larry (Cathy) Deeds of Orange, VA; Laura (Bruce) Torff of Locust Valley, NY; Ann (Ken) Miller, of Erie, PA; John (Bonnie) Deeds of Orange, VA; and Bill (Allison) Deeds also of Orange, VA. Fifteen grandchildren: Diana Deeds; Bonnie (Dom) Walker; Emily (Chris) Olney; Nicholas (Cassie), Andrew and Julia Schroeck; Allison and Avery Torff; Nate, Drew, Luke and Mary Claire Miller; Kara Deeds; Rylyn and Charlie Deeds; and three great grandchildren, Liam, Jarrett and Henry Schroeck. He is further survived by his brother Richard (Mary Ann) Deeds of San Jose, CA, several in-laws, and many nieces and nephews.
