Florence Ellen Thoen
March 18, 1933 – May 8, 2025
Florence Ellen Thoen, lovingly known as “Flo,” was born on March 18, 1933, in Logan, Colorado. She was preceded in death by her devoted husband, Curtis Edward Thoen, whom she married on December 13, 1953. Together, they built a life of adventure and service, most notably through Curtis’s work with the National Park Service. Their happiest days were spent traveling the country, both during his career and later in retirement, embracing life on the road as “snow birds,” visiting loved ones, discovering new places, and enjoying the beauty of the land they cherished.
Flo is survived by her son, Bruce N. Thoen of Manassas, Virginia; grandson, Andrew Thoen, his wife Hayley Thoen, and her great-granddaughter, Shiloh Thoen. She is also survived by her son, James C. Thoen of Vista, California; his wife, Susan Thoen; and their daughter, Tenaya Thoen. Her daughter, Tamra J. Campbell of Madison, Virginia, also survives her, along with Tamra’s husband, Thomas Campbell; their daughter, Kelly C. Wilson; Kelly’s husband, Zach Wilson; their children, Brooks and Leah Wilson and Flo’s grandson Mackenzie L. Campbell.
Throughout her life, Flo embraced the unique role of a National Park Service wife, supporting her family and forging friendships across the country as they moved from post to post—including Chaco Canyon National Historic Park, in New Mexico, Santa Fe, New Mexico, Platt National Park in Oklahoma, Washington, D.C., Shenandoah National Park in Virginia, and Redwoods National Park in California.
She will be remembered for her love for her family, and the quiet strength she carried throughout a life well lived.
