Robert Cleveland Russell                        June 17, 2025

Robert Cleveland Russell, born January 2, 1953, passed away peacefully at his home in Madison County, VA on June 17, 2025. Bob was preceded in death by the love of his life, Anne Wash Russell. Together, they had three children, Katie Russell (Daniel Lynn), Ben Russell and Kimberly Dodson (Tod). He was a loving father, grandfather (Emillee, Blake, Maddie, Thomas, Tucker, Stella, Lachlyn, Eli, Millie and Sully), father – in – law and friend. There are no words to express how much he will be missed by us all.
Bob was born in Broadstairs, England to the late Gene Daniel Russell and Doreen Smith Russell. He spent much of his youth on the family farm in Southerland, Virginia. As a teen, he attended Kempsville High School in Virginia Beach. Bob was a skilled athlete, excelling in football and wrestling. His dedication on the field and mat acquired him a scholarship to the University of Georgia (Go Dawgs). In 1973, he enlisted in the United States Airforce and became skilled weapons mechanic.
As the son of a Virginia State Police officer, Bob knew he wanted to pursue a career in law enforcement. He began his career as deputy in Louisa County, Virginia and met his wife, Anne. They married and 1977 and began a family. In 1979, he joined the Virginia State Police and graduated in the 67th basic academy. Bob and Anne moved to Madison County and purchased a house that would become their home and the home of their children and grandchildren. Bob left the Virginia State Police to campaign in the election for sheriff of Madison County. He was elected sheriff in 1988 and served the citizens of the county until his retirement in 2003.
During his years as sheriff, Bob impacted the lives of countless families. He helped get the wresting program started at MCHS and mentored many young men and women. The years spent on the mat with the youth of the county were some of his fondest memories! After the passing of his wife in 2002 and retirement from law enforcement, Bob found a new passion in motorcycles. This new passion for riding motorcycles and the comradery that came with it, gave him experiences, adventures and bonds he greatly cherished.
In 2008, Bob remarried the late Diane Snyder. Through this union, he gained three addition children (Dana Callender, Buddy Snyder, Deanna Wilson) and ten grandchildren.
For the last two years, Bob lived in the county he called home. He was surrounded by his family and friends until the day he took his last breath. He was proud of the life he lived and the ability to serve the community he loved. He will be missed by so many! But his legacy will live on forever!
There will be a private burial at the family cemetery. A celebration of life will be planned for a later date. Memorial contributions can be made to Madison County Sheriff’s Office 115 Church St. Madison, VA 22727.
