Raymond Clark “Ray” Deane, Jr., 79, of Stanardsville, Virginia, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 22, 2025, at Sentara Martha Jefferson Hospital. He was born on October 5, 1946, in Greene County, Virginia, to the late Raymond Clark Deane and Pearle Elizabeth White Deane.
Ray graduated from William Monroe High School in 1965, where he played basketball and baseball. He attended Chowan College, where he also played basketball, and later earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from East Carolina University in 1970.
Following college, Ray was drafted into the U.S. Army, serving from 1970 to 1972 as a member of the 3rd Infantry Regiment, the Presidential Honor Guard, and the U.S. Army Drill Team in Washington, D.C.
In 1973, Ray married his high school sweetheart, Evelyn, and together they built a loving home to raise their two sons. He dedicated more than 40 years to the textile industry, beginning his career with Liberty Fabrics in Gordonsville, Virginia, where he worked from 1972 until 1996. He later joined William Barnet & Son in Kinston, North Carolina, serving as General Manager until his retirement in 2013.
Ray will be remembered as a devoted husband, loving father, and proud grandfather who led with quiet strength, integrity, and care for those closest to him. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Evelyn Luverne Powell Deane, and survived by his sons - Christopher Haywood Deane and wife Megan Deane, Jason Clark Deane and wife Karen Deane; and, two granddaughters, Brooklynn Marie Deane and Teagan Clarke Deane.
A funeral service in his honor will be held at 1:00pm on Wednesday, October 29, 2025, at Preddy Funeral Home Chapel in Madison, VA with Pastor John “Jack” Snyder officiating. The family will receive family/friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service from 12:00pm-1:00pm. Interment will follow at Holly Memorial Gardens in Charlottesville, VA. Following the service, the family invites everyone to join for a celebration of Ray’s life with food and refreshments from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. at Greene Hills Country Club.
