The Lord called home Mert Thomas of Fork Union, Virgina, formerly of Scottville, on April 6, 2026.

Mert was born in Richmond on May 26, 1937. She was the third child born to Allen and Rosa Harris, who preceded her in death.

She is also preceded in death by her husbands, Bill Goodwin and John Thomas; her brothers Jack, Lin, Bobby, and Warren Harris; her sister, Alice Gibson; niece Michelle Harris; Great Niece, Brittany Thomas; Sister-in-law, Barbara Thomas; nephew Matt Thomas; and very special friends, Pat Thacker, Jackie Lohr, Tonya Brooks Harrison, and cousin Mary Crigger.

Mert is survived by her sons, Cliff Goodwin and wife Sherry, Ben Thomas and wife Karen; daughter, (Sissy) Rosa Patterson and significant other Chuck Dixon; grandchildren, Alexis Goodwin, Gabrielle Goodwin, Megan Miller, Hannah, John (Jake), and Mae Thomas, and Kelsey Haley, who was like a grandchild to her. She is also survived by her brothers, Clyde and Grover Harris, Sisters-in-law, Gracie and Irma Harris; a special cousin, Dickie Crigger; dear friend and neighbor Brenda Cheever; many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews, cousins, church family, and dear friends.

Mert owned and operated Video on the James in Scottsville for many years. She also owned and operated the Scottsville Pool Snack Bar in the 80’s and 90’s with Sissy, Ben, and other teens. She retired from the Dew Drop Inn, where she worked for ten years, to be able to spend time with grandchildren and family.

Mert’s family invites you to celebrate her life at Fox Memorial Baptist Church at 11 a.m. on Friday, April 10, 2026, with Randy Golliday officiating. The family will receive friends at the church from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 9, 2026. Interment will be private.
