Mary Gray Thompson (MY Mary, Mom-mom), 96 of Madison County, VA, saw the face of Jesus on Monday, May 4, 2026, when she left the Mountain View Nursing Home, Aroda, VA, for her final time. She was born July 31, 1929, to the late Herbert and Hattie Gray in Langley, VA, and was the wife of the late Dr. E. Wayne Thompson for 75 years. Mary had four brothers who preceded her in death.
She is survived by four daughters, Carol DeBuhr and husband Dale, Ringold, VA; Nancy T. King of Fairview, TN; Rebecca Bohler and husband David, Rochelle, VA; Mary Stallard and husband Vance, Lynchburg, VA. One son, David M. Thompson, and wife Debi, Rochelle, VA, and preceded in death by one son, Jonathan Thompson, married to Joy T. Sexton, presently of Brevard, NC, and one granddaughter, Jennifer Payne. Grandmother of 13, Great-Grandmother of 35, and Great-Great-Grandmother of 8.
Mary dedicated her heart and life to Christ at the age of fifteen and began a long and full life of service. After graduating from Fairfax High School, she married her high school sweetheart and became the most loving, serving, pastor’s wife, mother, and dearest of friends to people around the globe.
Mary was a member of Fellowship Baptist Church, Madison, VA, and in her latter years looked forward to “live-streaming” each and every service. Loving to sing, she enjoyed singing the old hymns of faith and listening to special arrangements during worship. She would date each passage of scripture in her Bible and the initials of the one preaching at the time. Mary loved God with all her heart, and it was evident in her life.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Mountain View Nursing Home, 1776 Elly Rd, Aroda, VA 22709, where she lived out her final two years of life. Her time there “was nothing short of amazing,” and she loved each one so very much.
Family will receive friends and family at 10:00 am with a memorial service at 11:00 am at Preddy Funeral Home, Madison, VA, on Friday, May 8, 2026, Pastor Dale Freeman presiding.
