Mary Louise Carter

Apr 6, 1936 — Jun 28, 2026

It is with profound love and deep sorrow that we celebrate the life and cherish the memory of Mary Louise Carter 90, of Gordonsville, Virginia, who peacefully departed this life on Sunday, June 28, 2026, at Hospice of the Piedmont in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Born on April 6, 1936, in Albemarle County, Virginia, Mary Louise was one of six children and the beloved daughter of the late James and Alice Winkie. To everyone who knew her she was affectionally called “Lou”. Her life was a beautiful testament to strength, kindness, faith, and unwavering devotion to her family. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Clarence Carter; her six daughters, Alice Carter, Barbara Carter, Rose Henderson, Sally Carter, Darlene Carter, and Wanda Jackson; one grandson C.J. Jackson, her three sisters, Katherine Carter, Joan Jackson, and Ruth Jackson; and her brother, Harry Winkie.

She leaves to cherish her precious memory her loving children, Deloris Johnson of Alexandria, Virginia, Clarence E. Carter of Gordonsville, Virginia, and Elva Trice of Newport News, Virginia; her brother, James (Nora) Winkie; and a host of beloved nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.

Mary Louise was a devoted and loving grandmother whose nurturing spirit touched the lives of all her grandchildren: Tammie and Mark Carter, Barbara and Brian Johnson, Paul and Ronald Carter, Chris and Sade' Carter, Anthony Jackson, Matthew, Jonathan and Isaiah Trice. She was also blessed with numerous great-grandchildren, each of whom carried a special place in her heart and will forever carry a part of her enduring love.

She was also blessed with the lasting friendship of Shirley Robinson, whose love, loyalty, and companionship remained steadfast through the years.

She was a faithful member of Union Baptist Church, where she served for over thirty years with dedication and grace as a Deaconess and Usher. Her steadfast commitment to her church reflected her deep love of God and her willingness to serve others with humility and compassion. She was also an active member of the Missionary Ministry, where she faithfully supported outreach efforts, encouraged others in their faith, and remained a source of strength and kindness within her church community.

Her legacy is one of compassion, resilience, and the enduring strength of family. Her gentle spirit, warm smile, and words of wisdom will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing and loving her. Though our hearts are heavy with sorrow, we find comfort in celebrating a life well lived—a life filled with love, sacrifice, and countless cherished memories. Her greatest past time was playing Bingo with her friends

A life so beautifully lived deserves to be beautifully remembered. May her soul rest in eternal peace, and may her loving memory continue to be a blessing and an inspiration to all whose lives she touched.

A Memorial Service will be held at 1:00 pm on Monday, July 6, 2026 at Union Baptist Church, 312 Cobb Street, Gordonsville, Virginia with the Reverend Charles F. Lewis, officiating. Immediately following the service, the family will receive family and friends in the Moses Anderson Fellowship Hall.
