Mary Lee Carpenter passed away on Thursday afternoon, January 15, 2026 at Greene Acres Nursing Facility where she had been living since September, 2025.
Mary was born to the late Charles and Frances Strother of Orange, Va. She was one of eleven children. She was also preceded in death by her brother, Ross Strother.
Mary Lee Strother met Shelton Carpenter, Sr. and out of that matrimony they had five children: William, Shelton, Jr., (Kim), Keith (Julie), Mike, and Jeanette Butler (Anthony deceased).
Mary was a housewife. Years ago, before her husband went into lumber yard work, he was doing farm work, and she could be found right beside him picking apples in the orchard. In 2015 her son-in-law signed her up to attend the Madison Senior Center, where she enjoyed playing bingo, dancing, going on outings, and being with friends. Mary had some health changes last year after Memorial Day. She also enjoyed listening to hymns, watching game shows, westerns, and the Washington Commanders.
Besides her children, she leaves to cherish her memories five grandsons, A. J. Butler, Keith Carpenter, Jr., Mark Carpenter, Meleek Butler, and Marquis Butler; four sisters, Geraldine, Frances Elizabeth, Helen and Cora; two brothers, Ralph and George; a number of nieces, nephews, and friends.
A funeral service will be held at 1:00 pm on Friday, January 23, 2026 at Preddy Funeral Home Chapel in Madison. Interment will be in Nazareth Baptist Church Cemetery in Boston, Va. The family will receive friends one hour before the service, from 12:00 to 1:00 at the funeral home.
