It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Majorie Irwin Moomaw Sherman, 102, on February 26, 2026. She is preceded in death by her husband, Welford Aston Sherman, Jr., and her only son, David Moomaw Sherman. She is survived by her daughters, Rebecca Sherman Ernouf (Ed), and Nancy Sherman Burton (Rodney); 5 grandchildren, Sherman Ernouf, Holly Sproule, David Burton, Hunter Burton (Kaity), and Sarah Bauer (Jordy). She has 5 great-grandchildren: Ashton Longo, Wes Sproule, Bron Bauer, Ben Burton, and Emery Burton.
Irwin was born on October 5, 1923, in Roanoke, Virginia, to Elise and David Moomaw. She lived there for 19 years and graduated from William Fleming High School. She attended Business College but did not finish because she met the love of her life, Welford, at a dance at VPI.
They were married in 1941, and after WWII, they moved to Orange, Welford’s hometown. Irwin was a secretary at Woodberry Forest School and also an interim administrator at Orange County Nursing Home when it was first opened.
Irwin loved playing golf, bridge, crossword puzzles, and winters in McAllen, Texas. She also loved VPI football games, Wendy’s Frosties, and cinnamon twist donuts. She was a member of the Orange Presbyterian Church and the Orange Garden Club. She especially loved making miniature Christmas trees and the ornaments that went on them.
Remember Irwin for her quick wit, her love of family, and her unwavering faith. She was our greatest gift and an inspiration to us all! Our Memaw!
Internment will be private. A Celebration of Life will be held at the Orange Presbyterian Church at 12 noon on Thursday, March 12. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to ACCA Transportation Fund, 1712 Bellevue Avenue, Richmond, VA 23227, which supports The Children’s Hospitals.
