Lucy L. Shepherd, 101, of Troy, Virginia, passed away on Friday, July 3, 2026, at Sentara Martha Jefferson Hospital.

Born on February 9, 1925, in Albemarle County, she was the daughter of the late Fannie Carter Howard. She is preceded in death by her husband, James E. Shepherd; daughter, Joseline McCowin; brother, Robert Howard Jr.; sister, Josephine Williams; as well as sons-in-law, Benjamin Arkward and Carl Creasy.

Mrs. Shepherd is survived by her brother, John (Pete) Howard; daughters, Theressa Arkward, Cynthia Shepherd, and Jacqueline Arkward (Richard); son-in-law, Lonnie McCowin; and Step-son, Leroy Carter (Gladys). She is also survived by a special family friend, Signora Hubert; seven grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren, five honorary grandchildren, and other loving family and friends.

Mrs. Shepherd was a member of St. James Baptist Church, Palmyra, Virginia. Many people knew her for her devoted service to the community as a childcare provider for over fifty years.

A celebration of life service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 25, 2026, at St. James Baptist Church – 17227 James Madison Highway, Palmyra, Virginia. The repast will be held immediately following the service at St. James.

Interment at the Shepherd Family Cemetery will occur at a later date.
