Lillian Marie Blankenship Edwards, 86, of Culpeper, passed away on Monday, November 10, 2025, at her home surrounded by family.
Born on October 24, 1939, in Orange, Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Lewis Winfield Scott Blankenship and Mary Algeria Dowdle Blankenship. In addition to her parents, Lillian was preceded in death by her husband, Clyde Lewis Edwards; nine siblings; her oldest son, Barry Edwards; and two grandsons, Douglas Keith Edwards II and Cody Daniel Yowell.
Mrs. Edwards, a lifelong lover of music, was the matriarch of her beloved family and the owner of Merrimac Grocery, “The Sport Shop,” since 1980. She found her greatest joy in caring for her family and those she loved. Her home was always filled with warmth, laughter, and the aroma of her famous home-cooked meals—shared not only with her family but also with friends and customers over the years.
She will always be remembered as a wonderful daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother, and friend. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
Survivors include her sons, Clyde “Mutt” Edwards Jr. (Kim), Douglas Edwards (Tiffany), Tim Edwards (Alessa), and Scott Edwards (Christy), twenty-two grandchildren; fifty great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brothers, Lewis Blankenship (Linda), Roy Blankenship, and Edward “Dooble” Blankenship (Linda); five brothers- and sisters-in-law, including one who was more like a son to her, David Edwards; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, November 16, 2025, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at Preddy Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held on Monday, November 17, 2025, at 1 p.m. at Preddy Funeral Home, 59 Edgewood School Lane, Madison, VA 22727, with Pastor Josh Shifflett officiating. Interment will follow in Madison Memorial Gardens, Pratts. She will be laid to rest by her grandchildren.
