Kimbrough Hamilton Mathews, 75 of Syria, passed away on December 25, 2025 at UVA Culpeper Hospital. He was born in Connecticut on January 29, 1950 to the late Prescott Wesslau Mathews and Betty Louise Stark Mathews.
Kim was an artist, sculptor, and carpenter. He enjoyed many years of volunteer service with the Potomac Appalachian Trail Club. He was always ready to help with any projects that came up at the many hiker’s cabins belonging to the Trail Club in the central Blue Ridge Mountain area. Most of his expertise was used at Meadows Cabin. He was the principal “cabin maintainer” there for 25 years. Many days were spent building fond memories there, working on various projects.
Kim loved to be outdoors. He could always be found cutting wood, gardening, or doing other outdoor chores. Each year we would wait for the return of the hummingbirds in April. This year they came back earlier than ever, staying to raise many more hummers over the summer.
He loved the Blue Ridge Mountains and all the people in this area.
He is survived by his partner, James McKown Ives of Syria.
