Joseph Oscar Wilson, III, 89, of Ruckersville, passed away peacefully on October 18, 2025.
Known to many as Honest Joe, he was born on August 17, 1936. Joseph was the son of the late Joseph Oscar Wilson, Jr. and Ethel Wilson Ware Grandstaff. He was a graduate of Fork Union Military Academy, where he developed the discipline, work ethic, and character that guided him throughout his life.
Joe proudly served his country as a member of the National Guard before beginning a long and dedicated career with Centel Telephone Company, where he worked as a cable splicer for 28 years. It was there that he met his wife of 47 years, Peggy Hoffman Wilson.
Joe’s days were brightened by the companionship of his pets. He enjoyed playing cards, making a deal, visiting gun and knife shows, and never missed an opportunity to chat with anyone he met along the way.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Ruby Johnson Wilson; granddaughter, Nevaeh Gentry; and stepson, Rodney Allen Shifflett.
Joe is survived by his beloved wife, Peggy Hoffman Wilson; children Connie Hanson, Debra Wilson, Joseph O. Wilson IV (Andrea), and Samuel Wilson (Susan); stepsons Michael Shifflett (Sharon) and Bradley Shifflett (Christal); daughter-in-law Penny Shifflett; and half-sister Patti Molter (Steve). He also leaves behind a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren, all of whom brought him immense pride and joy.
Joe will also be lovingly remembered by his dear and loyal “ride or die” friend, Rachel Snow, whose friendship enriched his later years with laughter and care.
A visitation for family and friends will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 pm on Thursday, October 23, 2025 at Preddy Funeral Home Chapel in Madison. A private graveside service will be held at a later date.
“You show that you are a letter from Christ, the result of our ministry, written not with ink but with the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone but on tablets of human hearts.
Such confidence we have through Christ before God.” 2 Corinthians 3-4
