John F. Beston

Aug 28, 1954 — Sep 11, 2026

John Francis Beston, age 72, of Rockville, MD, passed away peacefully on September 11, 2026, at his family’s home on Lake Louisa in Louisa, VA, with his loyal dog, Sawyer by his side. A loving husband, father, brother, uncle, Papa, and a friend to all, John will be missed beyond measure.

Born in Teaneck, NJ, to George L. and Elizabeth “Betty” F. Beston, he spent the majority of his early childhood years in Mineola, NY, alongside his three beloved brothers, George, Jimmy, and Tom. When John was 11 years old, the family relocated, settling in Washington, DC, where John attended St. Ann’s Academy and Catholic Church in Tenleytown and Archbishop Carroll High School. As a teenager and young adult, he loved playing basketball, attending live music events in and around DC, going on road trips and even just neighborhood adventures with his friends (some affectionately known as the Hearst Rats), many of whom he would know for decades to come.

Upon graduating from high school in 1972, John joined the United States Navy, stationed on the USS Laffey in Charleston, SC. After leaving the Navy, he attended Frostburg State College (now University), and eventually ended up back in the DC area, where he was both a bartender and patron to numerous haunts on Wisconsin and Connecticut Ave., NW. It was at one of those very bars that he would serendipitously reconnect with his future wife, Jane (née Donnelly), when he was 24, though they had first met as teenagers growing up in Northwest DC, with a handful of paths-crossing occasions throughout the years.

John married Jane in 1982, and together they raised three children in Silver Spring, MD, and later Rockville, MD. In the years he spent as a young dad, he could often be found cheering proudly on the sidelines of his kids’ soccer and basketball games, enjoying time outdoors at Lake Louisa or the beach, or simply sitting and having a chat. True to form, those activities are the same ones he enjoyed for 15 years as a Papa to his four loving grandchildren.

After a brief gig delivering RVs across the country in his twenties, John worked for most of his career as a facilities manager and building engineer. From St. Ann’s to Freddie Mac and beyond, his work reflected a lifelong propensity for tinkering, making repairs, and puttering. For his kids, neighbors, and really anyone who needed him - he was abundantly generous with his time and technical knowledge. He always had some plumbing or HVAC project in the works for his own home or for others. He retired in 2015 from the Carderock Division of the Naval Surface Warfare Center in Bethesda, MD.

In 2020, John was diagnosed with stomach cancer, and together with the unwavering support of his wife, NIH, and the Aquilino Cancer Center where he received his treatment and surgery, he beat it. He was an active member of Debbie’s Dream Foundation, and participated in multiple cancer support groups, where he was known for his encouraging words and attentive listening to new friends in similar situations.

One of John’s greatest and most notable gifts was the way he was able to connect with others, always with kindness, humor, curiosity, and care. He was quick-witted and a great storyteller, consistently showing up for his loved ones through the good times and the difficult ones too. He enjoyed researching his Irish ancestry and comparing notes and discoveries with relatives, taking great care with photos and old family artifacts. He never missed a reunion or an opportunity to engage with the folks in his life, and often put others’ needs ahead of his own. His relationships were everything to him.

John will be deeply missed by his family: his wife of 44 years, Jane; daughter, Caitlin (Tim), grandchildren Maisy, Hank, Levi, and Johnny; son, Thomas; daughter, Shannon (David) with a baby girl due in December; his brothers, George (Debie) and Tom (Connie); and his many cousins, nieces, nephews, brothers-, sisters-, and cousins-in-law, along with countless friends, all dear to his heart.

John was preceded in death by his parents, George L. and Elizabeth “Betty” F. Beston and his younger brother James “Jimmy” M. Beston.

Details for a service and celebration of John’s life are forthcoming and will be updated here, but are being planned for the end of October/beginning of November. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in honor of John to Debbie’s Dream Foundation, where he was an active member and contributor, or to Hero Dogs, Inc., a non-profit we know he would’ve loved.
