James Alvin Wood

James Alvin “Jim” Wood, 87, of Orange, Virginia, passed peacefully at his home on September 27, 2026. Jim was born June 27, 1939, in Denbigh, Virginia, to Arthur and Effie Wood. In 1957, he married his childhood sweetheart, Margaret Smith, and they were blessed with sons James, John, and Paul. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, and grandfather who will be missed tremendously by his family.

Jim spent his childhood around Newport News, later moving to Warrenton, Manassas, and Orange. He was a man of faith and served as a Southern Baptist Pastor at Broad Run Baptist Church and Forest Hill Baptist Church. He worked as a barber, owning shops in Charlottesville and Orange for over 20 years. Jim had a love of cars and motorcycles and enjoyed riding his Suzuki Intruder.

Jim is survived by his sons James A. Wood Jr. (Alison), John D. Wood (Violet), and Paul Wood. Also surviving are grandchildren Kathy Wood, John Wood Jr. (Amy), Michael Wood, James Wood III, Brittany Ryder (Nathan), and Noah Wood; and great-grandchildren John Wood III, Abigail Herrell, and Jacob Wood; sister Peggy Stroup; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife Margaret Smith Wood, parents Arthur and Effie Wood, and 6 siblings.

Preddy Funeral Home in Orange, Va is handling arrangements. Family Night will be held Friday, October 2, 2026 from 6-8 pm; Funeral Service will be held Saturday, October 3, 2026 at 12 pm.
