Dorothy Emma Taylor Hoffner Morris, lovingly known as “Dot,” passed away peacefully on Mother’s Day, Sunday, May 10, 2026, surrounded by the love and faith that defined her life. She was 86 years old.

Born on November 15, 1939, in Madison County near Kinderhook, Virginia, Dorothy was the daughter of William Franklin Taylor and Mamie Ardistia Lamb Taylor. A proud graduate of William Monroe High School, Dorothy was salutatorian of her graduating class and represented the spirit of a pioneering young woman of her time. She was active in numerous school activities including FHA, FBLA, glee club, newspaper staff, drama, and student leadership organizations. Known for her intelligence, poise, strong character, and radiant smile, she left an impression on classmates and teachers long before she began touching the lives of her family and community. She later earned a Certificate in Business Management from Piedmont Virginia Community College and worked as a devoted secretary before retiring.

Dorothy was a strong Christian woman whose faith was the foundation of her life. She attended Shiloh Church of the Brethren and Nortonsville Church of God and quietly led by example through kindness, grace, humility, and unwavering love for others. To know Dorothy was to feel welcomed, loved, and connected. She had a rare gift for making every person feel seen and valued, and her radiant smile is something everyone who knew her will always remember. Her warmth and gentle spirit left a lasting impression on everyone she met.

Family was the center of Dorothy’s world. She was a steady source of strength, wisdom, and encouragement to her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, extended family, friends, and church community. She was the kind of woman people turned to in difficult times — a true rock for so many. Through her love and faith, she helped guide generations closer to God and closer to one another.

She is survived by her beloved daughter, Terri Lynn (Hoffner) Tatum; brother David L. Taylor; grandchildren Stacie Lynn Tatum and spouse Timmy Breeden of Madison, Virginia, Wendy Marie Tatum Carannante and spouse Maurizio Carannante of Locust Grove, Virginia, and Stephen Wayne Tatum and spouse Libby Tatum of Midlothian, Virginia; great-grandchildren Sierra Coleman and fiancé Chris Ramey, Jayden Coleman, Hayley Coleman, Hannah Carannante, Antonio Carannante, Cameron Tatum, Channing Tatum and fiancée Elle Medina, and Miley Sue Ramey.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Johnie Hoffner, who passed away in 1984; her son, Tony Marlin Hoffner, who passed away in 1979; her second husband, Eddie Morris, who passed away in 2025; her son-in-law, Wayne Tatum; brothers Bernard F. Taylor, Dewey Taylor, and William Elmer Taylor; sisters Ruby Lillian Suter, Alice M. Taylor, Margie McDaniel, and Betty Pritchett; and many beloved family members and friends who welcomed her home to Heaven.

Dorothy will be remembered for her steadfast faith, selfless love, compassionate heart, and the way she made people feel deeply cared for. Her legacy lives on in the family she cherished, the faith she shared, and the countless lives she touched with grace and kindness.

A graveside service celebrating Dorothy’s life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 16, 2026, at Rose Park United Methodist Church Cemetery in Madison, Va. Family and friends are warmly invited to gather afterward at Shiloh Church in Standardsville, Va, for a time of fellowship and remembrance.

“Her children arise and call her blessed.” Proverbs 31:28
