Aura Kinzel Anderson, Jr., fondly known as Kinzel, passed away peacefully on June 7, 2026, at the age of 84. A longtime resident of River Edge Rehabilitation and Nursing Home in Waynesboro, Virginia, he faced complications from Type 2 diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease, and dementia with strength and grace.
Born in Charlottesville, Virginia, Kinzel was the son of Aura Kinzel Anderson, Sr. and Florence Catherine Colvin Anderson Moyer.
As a young boy, he delighted in summertime train trips from Charlottesville to Richlands to visit family in Tazewell County, Virginia and loved reading western themed novels, especially those written by Zane Grey and Louis L’Amour.
Kinzel graduated from Orange County High School in 1960, where he participated in junior varsity baseball, 4-H, chorus, and the Diversified Occupations Club. Throughout his working years, he held positions at the Somerset Center Store, Leggett, Liberty Fabrics, Kroger, and Klockner Pentaplast. Even in retirement, he continued serving others by caring for the yards of those who needed help.
In 1967, Kinzel married Linda Lou Marshall at Barboursville United Methodist Church, and together they raised three children in Gordonsville, Virginia. He later married Elizabeth Elaine Parsons in 1982.
Kinzel was deeply committed to his community. He served as a volunteer firefighter with the Barboursville Volunteer Fire Department and as Sunday School Superintendent at Gordonsville United Methodist Church. Known for his welcoming smile and outgoing nature, he had a gift for connecting with people and never met a stranger.
He enjoyed yard work, fishing, and watching sports, especially cheering for the UVA Cavaliers, Los Angeles Dodgers, Washington Redskins, and NASCAR. Above all, Kinzel treasured time spent with family and friends— sharing meals, listening to music, and playing games.
He is preceded in death by his parents; his stepfather, Judson Jarrel “Buck” Moyer; his paternal grandparents, Wiley Preston Anderson and Martha “Mattie” E. Brewster; his maternal grandparents, Alex Colvin and Patsy Jane Estes Colvin (Ladd); and many beloved aunts and uncles.
Kinzel is lovingly remembered by his children: Lisa Lynn Newman and husband Jimmie of Waynesboro; Kenneth Preston Anderson and wife Indi of Montross; and Marshal Garnett Anderson of Waynesboro. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Gage Tyler Anderson, Christopher James Newman, Briley Palmer Anderson, Dominick Marshall Anderson, and Camden Marshal Anderson. He is also survived by a sibling, Jerri J Moyer.
A private graveside service was held on July 11, 2026, at Maplewood Cemetery in Gordonsville, where his cremains were laid to rest with his mother.
