Alla Augustina Iizuka, 93, of Charlottesville, VA, passed away peacefully on Monday, May 4, 2026, at Autumn Care of Madison, VA. Born on May 28, 1932, in Crimea, Russia, she was the daughter of the late Michael Schiele and Galina Schiele. In addition to her parents, Alla is preceded in death by her loving and devoted husband, Mamoru Iizuka.
Alla was born in Crimea, Russia. Over the years, she lived in Heidelberg, Germany; Albany, NY; Los Angeles, CA; Zushi, Japan; Scarsdale, NY; Hudson, FL; and Charlottesville, VA. She was multilingual, proficient in Russian, German, and English, and a skilled draftsperson early in her career.
Alla was a passionate gardener and talented artist. When she wasn’t filling her home with warmth and love, she could be found caring for her beloved roses or sitting at her easel painting flowers and sunsets.
Alla was dedicated to her family and is survived by her daughter, Janet Mercado; her son, Thomas Iizuka; and her grandchildren, Alexandra Sloane (and her husband John Matson), George Sloane, and Cameron Iizuka.
The family would like to thank The Blake of Charlottesville Assisted Living for their compassionate care of Alla since 2021 and, more recently, Autumn Care of Madison, VA for their dedication and loving care. A private graveside service will be held on May 11, 2026, at Panorama Natural Burial Cemetery in Earlysville, Virginia.
