Dennis Carl Hassel

December 28,2020

DENNIS CARL HASSEL, 89
FEB 25, 1931 – DEC 28, 2020

Dennis peacefully passed in the very early morning hours on Monday, December 28, 2020. He resided at Heritage Inn Assisted Living, in the Pantops area of Charlottesville, VA.
Dennis was born February 25, 1931 in The Bronx borough of New York City to Karl Hassel of Norway and Mildred Lawrence Hassel of Westport, New York. Many summers prior to his mid-teens were spent in the Adirondack Mountains in Westport with his grandmother and cousins before moving to California with his mother at the age of 14.
At 17, in the spring of 1948, Dennis joined the U.S. Navy. He attended several schools associated with his service, went on to serve for a number of years aboard Naval surface vessels, serving during both the Korean and Vietnam conflicts. He ended his 20-year military career, retiring from the Navy’s guided missile program in Oxnard, California. For his “second” 20-year career he remained with the Navy Department’s Civil Service divisions in Oxnard, Philadelphia, and Arlington. He retired from Civil Service work to embark on a “third” career in the private sector, engineering contracts for the Navy Department and providing logistics for the Navy Seal Team. Those positions lasted more than 20 years. Throughout his life, Dennis was very patriotic and remained true and faithful to his country and to the U.S. Navy.
Very recently he celebrated his 67th wedding anniversary. He married Helen Marie Idol of West Virginia on Christmas Eve, 1953. Together, they raised three daughters.
In addition to his family, Dennis’ pride was his Honda Gold Wing touring bike that he traveled many miles on. Another was the home that he and Helen built in the foothills of Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains, in Greene County. Many, many projects and remodels to their home and property were some of his greatest achievements as he never entered into any project without giving it his all. Sadly, due to a couple of falls, he and Helen had to leave their beloved home for an assisted living facility that could provide the care they both required. They shared a room at the Heritage Inn Assisted Living in Charlottesville. The staff there adored him and worked extremely hard, along with his Medi-Home Health & Hospice team to give him comfort and a good quality of life to the end.
Dennis is preceded in death by his parents, Karl Hassel and Mildred Lawrence Campbell, as well as two sons-in-law, Donald Myers, and William Andrews.
He is survived by his spouse, Helen Hassel, daughters, Sherry Weseman and husband Fran of Louisa County, VA, Patricia (Patty) Andrews of Belle Chasse, LA, and Denise Hassel of Ruckersville, VA, four grandchildren, Dennis Andrews and wife Sweta of FL, David Andrews and wife Donna of LA, Rachel Henderson and husband Austin of VA, and Rhiannon Brown of VA, as well as two great grandchildren, Atlee Henderson and Drewe Andrews.
Dennis had no full-blooded siblings; however, his heart always remained close to his cousins from the upstate New York and Northern Virginia areas.
Arrangements are being handled by Preddy Funeral Home in Madison, Virginia.
Interment will be held at Holly Memorial Gardens in Charlottesville, Virginia.
There will be no service scheduled at this time, due to pandemic conditions.
In lieu of flowers, much appreciated memorial funds can be sent to: Medi-Home Health & Hospice, 941 Glenwood Station Ln, Ste 303, Charlottesville, VA 22901

Stephen Teel Goodwin

December 30, 2020

Born on September 15th, 1958 in Richmond, Virginia, Teel was quickly adopted by Billy and Jane Goodwin. He found himself in a loving home in Orange, Virginia. As a boy, Teel went to Grymes Memorial School before moving on to attend Woodberry Forest School as a day student. After graduating in May of 1976, Teel enrolled at the College of William and Mary. Two years later, he transferred to Mary Washington College to continue his studies, and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology in 1981.
Teel and Linda later married in 1982 at the Orange Catholic Church. Shortly afterwards, Teel began work at the Goodwin Brothers Lumber Company, where he worked for the following 13 years. After his first five years, he found himself the manager, a position he maintained until the sawmill was sold in 1990. Teel quickly moved on, becoming a salesman for Union Corrugating. Ten years later, he became the general manager of the Union plant, a position he held for the following 19 years before retiring.
Teel possessed a great passion for Orange County, leading him to run for the Board of Supervisors. He was first elected to the board in 2008 and served for the following 13 years, eight of which as the chairman or vice-chairman. Teel inspired a great deal of change in his time in office, assisting in the creation of a public safety center and radio system along with the expansion of broadband service throughout the county. He served on comities such as Orange Downtown Alliance to assist small businesses in the town.
Throughout his years, Teel made a lasting impression on his town and those in it. Guided by his fundamental principle, he always sought to help his fellow man and better his community. His ability to brighten a room with a quick joke along with his sound reason will be missed greatly.
The funeral service for Teel is going to be held on Wednesday, January 6th, 2021 at 2pm. With consideration taken to the Covid-19 pandemic, the service will be held at 730 James Madison Highway, a piece of property owned by the Orange Baptist Church. This will allow those that wish to pay their respects to Teel to do so from the safety of their vehicle. The service will take place on a stage in the field, while guest will be able to hear the ceremony over a loudspeaker or tune in on their radios. A celebration of Teel’s life will be held later in the year, once the threat of Covid-19 has subsided.
The family would like to give a special thank you to Hospice of the Piedmont for their exceptional care and kindness throughout his illness. Additionally, they would like to thank the Orange Baptist Church for providing a Covid friendly location for the funeral service. In Lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Hospice of the Piedmont or the Boys and Girls Club of Orange.
