Walter Gilbert Washington, Sr., 87, of Orange, Virginia passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 30, 2022 at the Hospice of the Piedmont in Charlottesville, Virginia. Born March 2, 1935 in Somerset, Virginia, Walter was proceeded in death by his parents, James Washington and Fannie Stewart Washington; his two sons Walter G. Washington, Jr. and Thomas Washington; and his two grandsons Walter G. Washington, III and Christopher Washington; and his sisters and brothers – Caroline, William, Fannie, Rebecca, Cora Lee, May Ella, James, and Thomas.

 

      Walter was a loving and devoted father who would do anything for his children. He leaves to cherish his memory his daughters Deanna Carter of Charlottesville, Virginia and Theresa (Sheldon) Phillips of Lawton, Oklahoma; his stepchildren Calvin (Donna) Washington of Richmond, Virginia; Joseph Washington of Charlottesville, Virginia; Frances Washington of Atlanta, Georgia; Frank Carter, Leslie Glover and Susan Carter all of Charlottesville, Virginia; and Clara Washington of Cohutta, Georgia; his grandchildren Teresa (John) St. Germain of Charlottesville, Virginia; Deion (Natina) Washington of Waldorf, Maryland; Brody Campbell of Charlottesville, Virginia; Shamika (Tron) Henson of Charlottesville, Virginia, and Darnell “DJ” (Kelsey) Glover of Orlando, Florida; Catrice “Tasha” Washington and Keisha (Zabian) Gibson of Duluth, Georgia; Troy (Tanashia) Washington of Earlysville, Virginia; Tiree Carter of Fort Worth, Texas, Brittany Mawyer and Sasha (Derrick) Sherrod of Richmond, Virginia; and Calvin Washington Jr. of North Carolina; his nieces Agnes (John) Cave and Gladys (Lucien) Henderson of Madison, Virginia; Mary Elizabeth Sims of Greene County, Virginia; Goldie Rawlings, Barbara Taylor, and Rosa Massenburg of Charlottesville, Virginia; and a special devoted friend Mary Carter of Charlottesville, Virginia; along with a host of extended family and friends.

 

      Walter worked for many years at Cooper Crouse-Hinds Plant and ConAgra Foods before they closed down. He returned to work at Food Lion in Orange County before retiring again in December of 2019. Walter was a member of the Kingdom Hall in Orange, Virginia. He loved coaching softball and watching movies (especially westerns).

 

      A memorial service will be held at Kingdom Hall of the Jehovah's Witness in Orange, Virginia on Saturday, July 16, 2022 at 1:00 pm. Funeral services provided by Preddy’s Funeral Home in Gordonsville, Virginia.

Ruth-Ellen Elizabeth Ragland-Johnson April 24, 2024 It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Ruth-Ellen Elizabeth Ragland-Johnson, a beloved Mother, Grandmother, Great-Grandmother, Sister, Aunt, Daughter, and Friend. Ruth peacefully departed on April 24, 2024, at her home in Louisa, VA. Born June 23, 1948, in Louisa, VA, she was the daughter of the late Esmo B. Ragland and Mary L. Ragland. She was preceded in death by her brother’s Albert Ragland, Raymond Ragland, and Harold Ragland, one sister, Janet Ragland, one nephew Felton Ragland and one sister-in-law Ethel Ragland. She is survived by four children, Jannelle Ragland, Boris Ragland Sr., Janet. Ragland-Temple (Mervin Sr.) and Simeon Johnson (Maxine). One granddaughter, Alicia Trice. Four grandsons Boris Ragland Jr. (Devora), Devin Ragland, Mervin Temple Jr. (TanaAsia) and Mitchell Temple (Kayondra). Four great-grandchildren Avery Harris, Caleigh King, Kason Temple and Milan Robinson-Temple. Two grand dogs Boodro Johnson, and Austin Ragland. Two brothers Esmo E. Ragland (Geraldine), and Bruce Ragland (Reva), one sister, Myrtle R. Hollins (Jimmy) and two sister in laws Emily Ragland and Maude Ragland. Eight nephews , Three nieces, Nine great nephews and seven great nieces. A special devoted niece Siobhan Ragland. Ruth also had 3 bonus children Robbie, Holly, and, Chapin Faulconer. 1 bonus grandson Trevon Gillison. A host of family and friends. Ruth was not only a mother figure to many but an adored soul, and always fashionable put together and ready to chat about her favorite reality tv shows. She was a devoted mother and grandmother to her children and grandchildren. Her love and compassion extended to all those who knew her, and she will be remembered for her candor, warm smile and sassy personality. Ruth lived a calm life and was a woman of the lord. She was an extraordinary cook and her homemade dishes were always the talk of the dinner. She also enjoyed reading, art, puzzles and her favorite Western TV Shows. A funeral service will be held at 12 p.m. on Tuesday, April 30, 2024, at Preddy Funeral Home Chapel in Gordonsville, with a visitation on Monday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. The interment will be held at Cobham Holiness Church of God.
